History

Susan and Elizabeth co-founded Green Art Workshop (GAW) in 2010. The first collaborative program brought youth to Recology’s Artist-In-Residence (AIR) program and Scrounger’s Center for Reusable Arts Parts (SCRAP). The workshop encouraged participants to consider their personal consumption and to draw inspiration from art that reflects a commitment to environmentally sustainable behavior. Students upcycyled materials such as textiles, paper, wood, and plastic objects to construct imaginative sculptures.

From the initial Green Art Workshop series, Elizabeth and Susan recognized youths’ excitement to explore the artistic potential of non-traditional re-usable materials. Since that time, they have been committed to providing quality art programs which promote creativity with a conscience. In 2016, in addition to San Francisco Bay Area programs, GAW expanded its geographical scope to the East Coast, offering programs in Massachusetts and New York.

Green Art Workshop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
